Commercial building with soot and smoke

Wildfire disrupts Local Business

Sylmar and San Fernando suffered a major wild fire last year. The fire went on for a couple days and created a large amount of smoke and soot to all the local businesses and homes. It was devastating to the locals because evacuations were in order and people were uprooted from their homes and forced to leave. SERVPRO of Sylmar/San Fernando decided to step up and help out the community. By dropping off water and food to the local safe zones and helping with evacuations, we were there for this hard time.

Besides helping out the community, we took on a claim that was very difficult. Imagine a warehouse filled with books. Hundreds of books covered in smoke and soot. It took some time but we were able to restore each and every book that was damaged. The owner of the business was very impressed by our work and staff. He wasn't expecting everything to be as perfect as it turned out to be. The owner was very appreciative for all the hard work and has referred us to many friends after that.

Mold helpful tips

SERVPRO Offers Mold Remediation to Your Home

Mold remediation is the outcome when too much water or moisture contacts a food source offering mold spores opportunities to colonize into a problem. Though mold growth is less of an issue in this part of southern California, it is still an economically impactful occurrence. Especially if water damage has transpired on the property. SERVPRO points out that if left untreated, mold proliferation can lead to material damage to the structure and possible health risks to the residents. Diligently inspecting the hot spots for mold growth can mitigate the chances of having to call SERVPRO for mold removal and sanitation of your property.

1. Bathroom. It is easy for mold to thrive in your bathroom because this is a region of the property where a high amount of moisture is produced. Mold can grow in several places within the bathroom setting, including the ceilings, walls, shower curtains, wet towels, toilet, and sink.

2. Kitchen. Tiny leaks behind the fridge in the ice-maker water line, near the dishwasher with temperature variations, and under the sink can create the moist environment necessary for mold to grow.

3. Basement. Basements with flood damage, missing waterproof membranes, foundation cracks, and poor grading are subject to mold infestation requiring mold remediation. The added factor of darkness and lack of sunlight offers mold spores all three conducive conditions for rapid mold proliferation: food source, moisture, and darkness.

4. Windows. Poor seals allow moisture and condensation on window panes if relative humidity (RH) is too high inside the structure. Mold can thrive near the edges of wood or metal-framed windows. The condensation will typically accumulate on the frames and sills of your windows. When left unchecked, mold can start to grow.

5. Attic. Substandard insulation allows higher temperatures that will raise the RH. Attics that have roof leaks, poor ventilation, or drain tile issues are susceptible to undetected mold growth.

6. Carpet. Exposure to moisture from leaks, overflowing water from plants, floor cracks, or floods. Quick suction action may prevent discarding of the carpet and padding.

7. Laundry Room. Washing machine leaks from supply lines or the drainage line are common. Periodically replace these. A clothes dryer with clogged filters from lint will not dissipate the heat properly causing poor drying time, wasted electricity and higher ambient RH.

Call SERVPRO For mold services. A large mold infestation must be dealt with safely by wearing protective clothing and gear. Containment is crucial to prevent the spores from circulating throughout the structure. We utilize specialized industrial grade equipment such as negative air pressure machines, dehumidifiers, air movers, air scrubbers, and fogging machines. The result is no musty odor and a sanitized, safe home. The SERVPRO professional technicians are corporate trained, and also, acquire IICRC certification in many aspects of cleaning and mold removal techniques.

Steps to Follow When Facing Flooding

When flood damage happens to your home, along with the physical and emotional toll the flooding can take on you, many times it can be difficult to know what to do next. Instead of trying to do it alone, take a look at the list below of things that will need to be done to restore your home back to normal.

When you first experience flood damage, you will want to get in touch with a professional flood damage repair company, such as SERVPRO. We are the right pick, because, on top of having the experience and knowledge that you need, we are available 24/7 to assist you in your time of need.

Make sure and turn off all the electricity, as water and electricity do not mix. Even if you think the area is safe, it is better to be safe until a professional can evaluate the situation. You will also want to stop the water. If it is possible at all, try and stop more water from coming into your home. You can place barriers between any gaps in your home and the external sources of water, like mats, boards, and other items which could stop the water.

Remove any equipment, furniture, and other items away from the moisture and water. If you cannot move it yourself, you can have a storage company come and relocate it until the water is extracted and your home is dry again. If the furniture has been damaged already by the water, you cannot store it, since it will be a source of mold and mildew growth. Therefore, choose just the furniture that is dry.

All the water and humidity will then need to be professionally extracted from your home, which the technicians at SERVPRO can do for you. This includes your furniture, carpets, drywall and other areas that have been impacted. Some of your possessions may not be salvageable and will need to be appropriately disposed of. We can help you to determine which items can be saved and which ones cannot. Some items we will be able to fix for you, while others could be a potential health hazard and need to be taken out of your home. Flooding can cause damage to many areas in your home which will need repairs include walls, cabinets, furniture and floors. These items can wind up needing extensive remediation, all of which we can assist you with.

Make a Storm Plan!

10/3/2018 (Permalink)

Formulating a Plan When You Live in a Flood Prone Area can Help Save Your Property

Apart from the dangers that they present to humans, storm floods leave behind a series of destruction in their wake, ruining buildings, washing away natural landscape features, and demolishing roads. Often, homeowners find themselves dealing with extensive damage on their property. Floods can cause a surprising amount of structural damage to a structure, especially when water finds its way into the house and stays there for a prolonged period.

When the flood waters recede, the first thing you should do is contact a trusted restoration company to assess the damage. As a locally based and operated business,  We have a team of highly trained, highly experienced technicians with access to advanced tools and equipment, ensuring that the restoration process goes swiftly and smoothly.

The most important thing to remember when faced with any type of flood damage situation is to keep your family safe. Items may be salvageable, and if you take additional measures to protect your most priced documents, family photos, and heirlooms, the loss and devastation can be much less.

One way you can protect important documents and photos from severe water damage is by digitizing them. Today, many storage devices such as USB drives can withstand some level of water damage and are often salvageable. You may also store these items on a portable hard drive, and then lock the device securely in a safety deposit box. While digital copies are not the same as originals, recreating the images to their original state is relatively easy.

Make a list of all valuable items in your home, and even take photos of the exterior and interior of your home. Keep this list along with your insurance plan in a safe place that is relatively less susceptible to flooding. Consult your insurance agent on what to include in the itemized list.

Call SERVPRO for Water Damage Repair Services

Air conditioners are designed to provide homeowners with comfort and humidity control during the hot summer months. However, what many homeowners do not realize is that some air conditioning systems can lead to water damage in their home. Typically, the damage is noticed too late for homeowners to be able to prevent it, and they need to contact  remediation experts to fix their home up again. Fortunately, you can learn to identify the signs of air conditioner water damage and prevent it from marring your home.

A good way to avoid water damage from an air conditioner is to change the system's air filter at least once or twice a month. During the replacement, you can also check your moisture levels and determine whether or not there is too much water in the area. With clean air filters, homeowners also help prevent their HVAC systems  from working too hard, which usually leads directly to an increase in water waste from the unit and higher electric bills.

In addition to making sure that the system remains clean, it is important to have an expert service the unit at least once a year. Specialists can find water damage that you may overlook, and they have the tools necessary to deal with minor problems before they become large concerns. They can inspect the interior of the unit to make sure that there is no built-up dirt, algae, or other signs of damage, and a yearly inspection is often all that's necessary to keep the system functioning as needed.

H2O damage

Foundation Problems Can Lead to Serious Water Damage

Foundations take an especially hard beating by water, as they are partially or entirely buried in damp soil all the time. They are the areas of your home which are in continual contact with water, and unfortunately, can be a cause of water damage. If rain water is not properly diverted and controlled, it can inflict a large amount of damage to the foundation of your home, even possibly compromising the structural integrity of the foundation.

The purpose of a slab foundation is to give weight-bearing support to a building. It is made of concrete and fits over footings which are also made of concrete. The footings usually anchor to the slab with reinforced steel bars or rebar. Under the foundation, soil should be leveled and able to create a moisture barrier between the home and the ground. Some of the problems with slab foundations come from them being constructed improperly, water and sewage leaks underneath the slab or the movement of soil under the slab.

There are three main ways that water affects a foundation:
Hydro-static Pressure
This can cause more than just a leak in your basement. When water over-saturates the soil around the foundation, the result is hydro-static pressure, which can push the walls inward, making them bow and crack. This can happen suddenly, over time, or during a period of torrential rains.
Expanding Soils
Clay-rich soils in some areas will expand when they are drenched with water, which puts an enormous amount of pressure on the foundation walls. This will make them crack, shift or bow.
Erosion
Underground springs and rainwater can wash the soil which supports the foundation slowly, creating foundation settlement. Early signs of settlement are not always obvious, and can be easily dismissed until they’ve become serious enough for the intervention of a professional. Signs of this type of water damage include uneven floors, sinking, windows and doors which don’t close properly, tilting chimneys and cracks in drywall.

Fire

9/18/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Mold

9/18/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is dangerous, yet something that can be taken care of instantly. Coming across mold at a property isn't fun, but if you do the right thing fast there should be nothing to worry about. SERVPRO has trained mold remediation technicians that are ready to tackle down anything.

Spotting mold can be frustrating and can be confusing at times, but here is a basic list of what mold is and should SERVPRO help you with any current and future mold issues.

  • Mold can be found anywhere, as long as there is moisture mold has the chance to grow.
  • Mold can grow on drywall, wood studs, carpets, food, paper, and even on insulation. Mold is reproduced through spores and when mold spores land on wet areas in the house that is when it starts to grow. That spore digests whatever damp item it lands on and it grows in order for it to survive. Once that mold fungus is in contact with moisture bacteria is created and then mold starts to grow within days.
  • When extra moisture accumulates in an area or specifically on a material, mold will start to form and grow. If there is constant moisture in an area, hence the bathroom and the kitchen always make sure that after your steamy hot shower you wipe everything down. Wipe your walls and mirror in the bathroom with a dry towel to prevent from constant moisture being left on the materials in the bathroom after a shower. When washing dishes or using excess water in the Kitchen make sure everything is wiped down dry to avoid mold spores to be created and have mold grow.
  • Mold spores are not visible to the naked eye, you will not be able to spot them until they you see them in the form of mold. Be extra cautious to the rooms and materials being in contact with moisture on a daily basis.
  • Prior to mold being visible to the naked eye, you may be smelling a musty or earthy smell. When this occurs immediately contact SERVPRO, and we will have our mold crew come out and inspect your property for these first signs of mold. Do not ignore signs like smell, you can be able to prevent the mold from growing more.
  • Mold can appear on the outside of the walls as a stain or discoloration and come in a fuzzy form, when you spot these signs of mold SERVPRO will remove the growing mold spores and return the area back to the normal levels where there is no mold spores near.
  • Everyone is aware that all molds, weather green or black, have the potential to cause health effects.
  • When the mold remediation technicians of SERVPRO are eliminating the mold growth it is done under a properly built containment where it is sealed and does not have access to spread mold spores into other unaffected areas. After SERVPRO are complete with the mold remediation, an Industrial Hygienist will schedule to confirm that mold is no longer present. They will be taking a count of spore to confirm to us SERVPRO and the homeowners that mold is no longer present.
  • Mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling the moisture by wiping down dry to not let dampness sit on materials.
  • The reason behind mold remediation is to remove the mold that is present at the property so we can prevent human contact and damage to the building materials.

If you suspect mold at your property, feel free to call SERVPRO at (818) 365-3736 and get connected to one of our highly trained mold remediation technicians.

Storm prep

9/18/2018 (Permalink)

One way or another we experience storms.   Rather it be snow, rain, wind, etc, it is going to happen. When it does happen we need to be prepared. The following list is what is recommended at a minimum to be ready in the event of a storm.
    • Flash Light (it is possible for the power to go out during a storm)
    • Extra Batteries (flashlights never work when needed, having extra batteries can save you from the dark)
    • First Aid Kit (make sure nothing is outdated in the kit so it is possible to use the items if needed)
    • Cellphone (Now a days everyone has a cellphone, it is necessary to have one in case the house phone does not connection)
    • Canned Food (might not have food to cook, it is important to have up to date canned foods just in case for emergency purposes)
    • Manual Can Opener (do not just rely on an electrical can opener because the electricity can go out during a storm)
    • Bottled Water (water is the most important thing to have around the house)
    • Blanket (it is possible for the heaters at your property to stop working, make sure you have blankets around to keep you warm)
    • Battery Powered Weather Radio (using a radio can help you stay connected to what is happening during a storm in case your T.V does not work and you cannot connect to the weather channel)

Being prepared will help keep panic at a minimum especially in a family that has children involved. Not only will these items benefit you but it will help benefit your loved ones around as well. These items should be kept in a safe place with easy access in case of a storm emergency. Every month or so check the battery life and replace if needed. Make sure that the canned food and bottles of water are up to date and if need replacements to do it immediately during a storm season. Also remember to go over the items in the kit with your family so they are aware of everything put into the kit.

Mold Behavior

3/27/2018 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Check your trees

10/6/2017 (Permalink)

Most damage to a property during severe weather occurs when limbs or trees fall. High winds and saturated soil conditions typical of winter storms can cause tree roots to fail and branches to weaken. The heavy rainfall is what causes the ground to be so saturated and makes the trees unstable. Trees that retain foliage in winter such as conifers and certain oaks are most at risk for damage because the foliage adds weight and wind resistance. None of this is any easy experience for a homeowner. That is why pre-storm strategies are recommended to identify potentially hazardous conditions and to help reduce the risk of damage before harsh weather occurs.

In many cases, hazards are not always obvious to the untrained eye and correcting them can be a dangerous job. While it is impossible to totally protect your trees and property from severe storms, a certified tree specialist can inspect for issues that could predispose trees to failure. This could include a climbing inspection or an analysis of decay that may be present in the branches, stems, or roots.

Drain it out

Water Damage Drain it out dehumidifier draining the water out of the air

Water damage can happen in all kinds of ways and there all many different ways of cleaning it up. This is one way SERVPRO of Sylmar/San Fernando gets that water out. This is a dehumidifier and it is draining the moisture in the air into the sink. When you first walk into a room with water damage it can feel very humid and that's what this machine is for. Just one of the ways to dry an affected area. We also use other equipment that do different jobs but at the end of it all we get the affected area dry and ready to restore. Once we have wrapped up the drying process the next step is the reconstruction crew comes in repairs the room back to normal or new.

What is water damage

10/6/2017 (Permalink)

What is Water Damage?

Water damage describes a large number of possible losses caused by water coming in  where it will enable attack of a material or system by destructive processes such as rotting of wood, growth, rusting of steel, de-laminating of materials such as plywood , and others.

The damage may be extremely slow and minor such as water spots that could eventually mar a surface, or it may be instantaneous and catastrophic such as flooding. However fast it occurs, water damage is a very major contributor to loss of property.

One's homeowner's insurance policy may or may not cover the costs associated with water damage and the process of water damage restoration. While a common cause of residential water damage is often the failure of a sump pump, many homeowner's insurance policies do not cover the associated costs without an addendum which adds to the monthly premium of the policy.

Fire Damage leftovers

10/5/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Fire Damage leftovers These were possessions at one point.

What to do right after the fire...

When you make a fire damage insurance claim, you'll likely need to submit an inventory list of all damaged personal property to your home insurance company. This will require you to begin separating the damaged and undamaged items. It's important to note, though, that having a detailed list of all your possessions already on hand will alleviate a difficult process and help settle the claim much faster.

This list should include the brand name, receipts, purchase price, serial number, and the description of each item. If you don't have copies of the receipts, or if they were destroyed in the fire, make sure to get copies of your previous bank statements.

Any belongings that aren't damaged should be kept in storage. Most homeowners insurance companies will help cover storage costs if the home is rendered uninhabitable — but more on that later.

When the fire blows out your windows.

10/5/2017 (Permalink)

This apartment building had one rough night! Due to an electrical shortage that caused a big fire to start in this one unit there was a ton of damage as you can see all the black soot and smoke on the outside of the building. This is a big job for the crew here at SERVPRO of Sylmar/ San Fernando. There are steps they have to follow to restore this unit and the ones affected around it.

It's important that you don't re-enter your home, or any surrounding structure, that's been affected by the fire until permitted by local building officials or the fire department. Not only can fires erupt again, but there's almost always hidden damage that could render the home unsafe. Open doors carefully, and don't force them open if they're jammed because you run the risk of further structural damage or collapse. Any remaining soot, debris, and dirty water could make you sick too, so use extra precaution when going back into your home, especially if you touch damaged items.

What is mold?

10/5/2017 (Permalink)

What is Mold?

We hear a lot in the media these days about the dangers of exposure to mold, but what is mold exactly, anyway? Mold is not a plant or an animal, but a type of fungi. We eat some types of fungi, like many kinds of mushrooms and the yeast we use to make bread rise. Some types of mold are even used to make medicine, like the type of mold that is used to make penicillin, a life-saving antibiotic. Other types of mold can be harmful to our health, however.

There are hundreds of different kinds of mold found both indoors and outdoors. Mold grows in damp, dimly-lit areas. Indoors, it can often be found in places like attics, basements, crawl spaces, and bathrooms. Mold is also common in other areas if there is a leak in the roof, leaky windows, leaky pipes, or seasonal flooding.

What is mold Remediation?

10/5/2017 (Permalink)

What is Mold Remediation?

Mold Remediation is the process of removing mold and repairing mold-related damage in the home. It’s a complicated process and must be done carefully in order to prevent further exposure to potentially harmful mold spores. Mold can be cleaned from some materials, like bathtubs and tile, and the surfaces disinfected. Some materials, though, like drywall, wood, and carpeting, are impossible to clean thoroughly and instead must be removed and replaced.

Mold remediation is challenging in part because mold can grow in so many out-of-sight places, including inside walls, under carpeting, above ceiling tiles, and inside heating and air conditioning ducts. Just locating all the mold can be difficult, and if you miss even a little bit, it will just continue to grow and spread. Soon you’ll have a full-blown mold problem on your hands again. Call SERVPRO of Sylmar/San Fernando for more information.

Be prepared for rain fall

9/29/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Be prepared for rain fall Late night emergency tarp up due to the storm.

Do these few tasks to ensure you are in the clear for the next storm:

  • Trim the trees. Dead tree limbs can fall on your roof and cause damage, especially when it’s raining or snowing. Trees that are leaning towards your house could also fall on your roof or allow squirrels and raccoons to pay your roof a visit. Twigs, leaves, and other debris can cause rotting, gutter blockage, termite invasion, and roof damage. If you want to make sure you are in the clear make sure you remove anything hanging over your home.
  • Check and clean the gutters. One of the best ways to prepare for the cold season is to clean your gutters and ensure they’re well-anchored. This allows all the water to flow off your roof. So remove leaves and other debris from the gutters regularly throughout the fall.
  • Inspect the roof for damage:
    • Check the roof flashings – these cover gaps near vents and chimneys, and can be dislocated during a storm. Replace faulty flashing pieces.
    • If you have an asphalt roof, replace shingles that have bare spots, are warping, or are curling at the edges.
    • If you own a wooden shake roof, look for signs of warping. If at least 25 percent of your wood shingles are damaged, replace the roofing material.
    • If you have a metal roof, look for signs of pitting, corrosion or gapping seams as these can lead to leaks or underlay damages.

H2o damage

9/29/2017 (Permalink)

Water is needed for so many things in life. We need it to live, water our plants and cleanse the planet. However, it can also cause a lot of damage. If you do not have water contained in your home you could end up with a big bill of repairs. Make sure you have checked the main things that could cause water damage in a home such as:

  • roof
  • plumbing
  • window and door seals

Just to name a few but I am sure you can think of so many more depending on the home and size. Keep in mind your yards can also add to the water damage of a home if your outside water pipes are not taken care of. Let's try to stay dry this winter!

Steps to take after you spot storm damage

9/29/2017 (Permalink)

Storm damage can occur at any time and can cause an immense amount of harm to your home. Heavy rains can cause flooding and powerful winds can cause roof damage and downed trees on your property. Sometimes post storm damage can create health issues so make sure you take the proper steps.

Take Safety Precautions

Heavy winds and rain can create physical hazards such as collapsed roofing materials, window damage, collapsed walls or standing water in the basement or home interior. In addition, moisture can soak into furniture, carpeting, and building materials making the perfect environment for mold growth that can cause health issues. Beware of broken glass, exposed nails, and other sharp objects on the property. Contact SERVPRO of Sylmar/ San Fernando to help do basic tasks to secure your property and make it safe to use. If necessary, arrange for an alternative place for you and your family to live while your property is being restored to safe living condition.

Photograph the Damage

If it is safe to move around your property, use your cellphone or a camera to photograph the damage so that you will have a record for your insurance company. This action will ensure that you are fully compensated for all the damages.

Contact Your Insurance Company

Contact your insurance agent to notify them about the damage to your home immediately. The company will send out an adjustor to determine the extent of the damage so that payment for repairs can be made quickly.

Look Into Federal Disaster Assistance

The federal government may have declared the area affected by the storm as a disaster area that is eligible for low-cost loans to help restore your property to normal. You will be required to file documents to receive these loans.

When a storm-related disaster strikes, it may seem overwhelming, but these steps can help you to begin the process of restoring your home, and your life, to normal. At SERVPRO of Sylmar/San Fernando we provide 24-hour emergency disaster service. We specialize in the stabilization and restoration of homes and businesses that have suffered small or large loss from water, flood, wind, storm, fire and smoke disaster.

9/29/2017 (Permalink)

Severe summertime rains are making it hard to stay positive! As more rain is forecasted, in California for the coming weeks, more homeowners are worried about their already flood damaged homes and basements.

When the rain has already soaked the ground, there really is nowhere for it to go, but up through the basements of homes. Of course if a wet basement goes unchecked, it can ruin floors, walls and create an environment for mold to grow and even damage roofing.

When you find yourself in this predicament remember to call SERVPRO of Sylmar/ San Fernando at (818) 951-6780 for help or an estimate and we will be there to help you through this rough time. Dealing with water damage can never be a fun thing but you don't have to do it alone.

Sylmar/ San Fernando Smoke and Soot Cleanup

9/29/2017 (Permalink)

Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Sylmar/San Fernando will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

When the hills are on fire

9/29/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage When the hills are on fire The hills of Burbank and surrounding areas were on fire

A wildfire in the Burbank area has grown to more than 2,000 acres, prompting new evacuations Saturday for hundreds of homes in Burbank areas, authorities said.

At least 1,500 homes are threatened, fire officials said.

The fire had largely burned in areas without many homes until late Saturday afternoon, when winds began to shift from the northwest to the southwest.

Those residents have to be watching the weather, watching the media, and have to be ready to evacuate at any time.

The fire’s rapid growth has been fueled by “excessive heat, low humidity, extreme dry fuels that have not burned for several decades, and very rugged terrain,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, who represents the area and attended the news conference.

4 easy steps to protect your commercial building

9/29/2017 (Permalink)

If you are a business owner you should read and follow these 4 easy steps to make sure you are ready and secure in the event of a disaster in your commercial building:

Step One: Inspect Properties

At least once a month, assess various areas of a building to look for signs of moisture from leaking pipes and fixtures. Check water distribution systems, including bathroom fixtures, kitchen plumbing and drinking fountains, especially devices that are old and degraded. Keep a record of plumbing fixtures that are prone to having frequent failures such as galvanized or steel pipes and connectors. Inspect decorative water fountains, swimming pools and hot tubs at the same time. Understand the particular areas of a property that do not have drainage systems such as parking garages. In a water leak emergency, lower levels of a building without drains require portable or fixed sump pumps.

Step Two: Mitigation Plans

Create and implement a loss mitigation plan for employees to follow when finding a leak in a multi-story building. A basic emergency plan should contain written guidelines that include conducting initial and annual training for staff and tenants concerning procedures to follow after finding a water leak. The plan should also include a map or diagram showing the location of water shutoff valves and exactly how to close the devices. If a building has a sprinkler system for fires, then it is often necessary to turn off these devices to avoid damage from water or chemicals. For confidential or sensitive areas of a building, make a list of the designated employees who can enter the space.

Step Three: Emergency Contact List

Maintain an up-to-date 24-hour emergency contact list with names and telephone numbers for:

• The business maintenance staff
• Plumbers
• Electricians
• Tenants
• Local water company after-hours number
• Water mitigation service vendors such as SERVPRO of Sylmar/San Fernando
• Building agent or broker

Step Four: Additional Plans

When a major water disaster happens in a multi-story business, owners need to know where all records are kept along with essential services and key operating systems. Business owners should always have duplicate records in a safe place off-site in addition to having online records. Understand the procedures for relocation or movement of goods, records or tenants to a safe area. A written plan for evacuation of employees, guests and tenants along with equipment shutdown and closing a facility is essential to save property and people from danger.

Commercial damage and repair

9/29/2017 (Permalink)

Commercial damage is very difficult to get rid of on your own, especially when you consider what goes into fire restoration. Fire restoration involves many different steps and processes, and this is why it is imperative that you hire a fire damage expert who can come to your home and do the clean up for you. They will be able to come and take care of the electrical fire or utility room fire that has happened after firefighters have left using their fire trucks and fire hoses.

Along with having this type of commercial fire damage repair done, you may also want to consider a fire sprinkler system and fire suppression system along with fire restoration. Fire restoration alone is simply not enough, since you will want to prevent the issue from happening in the future using a fire sprinkler system and fire suppression system for your own needs. This is why a lot of people have made the decision to contact the experts after dealing with an electrical fire or utility room fire.

Does Your Sylmar/San Fernando Home Have A Mold Problem?

9/8/2017 (Permalink)

Mold is dangerous, yet something that can be taken care of instantly. Coming across mold at a property isn't fun, but if you do the right thing fast there should be nothing to worry about. SERVPRO of Sylmar/San Fernando has trained mold remediation technicians that are ready to tackle down anything.

Spotting mold can be frustrating and can be confusing at times, but here is a basic list of what mold is and should SERVPRO of Sylmar/San Fernando help you with any current and future mold issues.

When this occurs immediately contact SERVPRO of Sylmar/San Fernando , and we will have our mold crew come out and inspect your property for these first signs of mold. Do not ignore signs like smell, you can be able to prevent the mold from growing more.
  • Mold can appear on the outside of the walls as a stain or discoloration and come in a fuzzy form, when you spot these signs of mold SERVPRO of Sylmar/San Fernando will remove the growing mold spores and return the area back to the normal levels where there is no mold spores near.
  • Everyone is aware that all molds, weather green or black, have the potential to cause health effects.
  • When the mold remediation technicians of SERVPRO of Sylmar/San Fernando are eliminating the mold growth it is done under a properly built containment where it is sealed and does not have access to spread mold spores into other unaffected areas. After SERVPRO of Sylmar/San Fernando are complete with the mold remediation, an Industrial Hygienist will schedule to confirm that mold is no longer present. They will be taking a count of spore to confirm to us SERVPRO of Sunland/Tujunga and the homeowners that mold is no longer present.
  • Mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling the moisture by wiping down dry to not let dampness sit on materials.
  • The reason behind mold remediation is to remove the mold that is present at the property so we can prevent human contact and damage to the building materials.
