The active wildfires here in Southern California are increasing their impact as growing Santa Ana winds add fuel to these devastating blazes that are encroaching in our area. According to the New York Times, new fires broke out in Malibu on December 7, with at least 96,000 acres already burned in the Ventura area and 116,000 acres in Los Angeles County. Evacuations have closed hundreds of schools and forced 200,000 of our neighbors to seek safety. The “Thomas Fire” in the Ventura area continues to burn with the aid of strong winds. This fire has caused the closure of the 101 freeway and a boil-water advisory was issued for Ventura County. The Santa Ana winds that are enabling the fires to rapidly increase their reach can have speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour. They are not expected to diminish until Friday into Saturday at the earliest. The National Weather Service has warned of “very rapid fire growth” in this area. SERVPRO Meteorologist Lela Davis said that the Santa Ana winds were already very dry when they reached the Southern California valley, allowing them to quickly pull moisture out of vegetation, increasing the risk for wildfires. For the first time ever, a purple wind warning was issued for today under the color-coded system used to advise about high winds. This purple warning pushed wind expectations from the “high” category to “extreme”. Ready to help Here at SERVPRO of Sunland/Tujunga we are monitoring this wildfire situation closely. How to Help Home Fire Survivors

9/7/2021 (Permalink)

Yellow caution tape with fire trucks in the backround. How can you help when someone in your community loses everything to a fire?

As restoration professionals, we at SERVPRO of Sunland/Tujunga frequently work with homeowners going through the worst disasters of their lives. We’re proud to be able to help and to fix what’s been damaged. We know the joy of making homes “Like it never even happened.” But what do you do when someone’s home is actually destroyed by fire?

How can we as a community step up when a family loses everything in a fire? If you know the family, the simplest way to help is to give your neighbors the items that survivors of house fires need the most:

  1. Immediate necessities. Imagine walking into a hotel room with no bags. What do you change into after your shower? How do you brush your teeth? Gently used clothes from your own closet are generally considered appropriate since they’re immediately available and don’t require the time and effort of wardrobe shopping. But on your way to deliver them, stop by Walmart or Target and grab some new socks and underwear.
  2. Short-term basics. Now imagine moving into a new apartment with no boxes—no towels to put in the linen closet, no dishes to put in the cabinet. As you’re preparing to help a neighbor in need, mentally walk through your day and think about all the things you use daily.
  3. Long-term help. Now if you really know the family, work with them to provide assistance as they go through the process of recovery. Are you good with organizing? Maybe you can help them work with the insurance companies? Do you know their kids? Suggest a playdate while the parents work their to-do lists? Create a meal calendar for their friends or just take them out and let them talk.

If you don’t know the family affected by fire damage (or if it’s a community-wide disaster you’ve seen on the news) the best way to help is to donate money. You can give through gofundme.com or local charities, but the Red Cross is a consistently reliable organization with years of experience helping in exactly this sort of situation.

No one can know exactly what it's like to survive a house fire, but we know enough to know that we're needed and that's where we need to start.

Your living arrangements are going to change. If your house has only minor damage, and the utilities are working fine, you might be able stay in the home. your family is most likely safer off the premises.

Can you stay in the home?

The final answer comes down to the extent of the damage, and whether is safe to do so.

What items should I take with me?

Any item that is of value to you should be kept in your possession. Difficult to replace items such as photographs, keepsakes, and firearms should also be kept with you. Never leave personal information, cash, medications, or important documents at the site of the fire. Take these items with you to keep them safe!

6 Fire Safety Tips For Every Home

7/27/2021 (Permalink)

A home fire escape plan. Be Prepared and Have a Home Fire Escape Plan

Our homes are our sanctuaries, and unfortunately they can also be a source for multiple opportunities for fire danger: not attending a stovetop can result in a kitchen fire; electrical systems can become defective; appliances can overheat; open flames from fireplaces, candles, flammable liquids, and outdoor grills — to name just a few — all add to the risk of a fire in our home.

Having the correct fire safety equipment and escape plan for your home is essential to keep your family safe and your house protected. We are happy to share with you the following six fire safety tips to help better prepare your home and loved ones in case there is a fire. The peace of mind that comes from knowing you’re prepared is worth the time, effort, and expense involved.

Fire Escape Plan

While not a 'piece of equipment' the most important thing you can have is a plan. Make sure anyone living in your home knows what to do and understands how to escape if there is a fire. Smoke and heat from a fire can lead to confusion and panic. The best way to combat this uncertainty is to have a plan that is easy to remember and provides for safe exists for everyone. If you need help preparing your plan, here is a good resource from the American Red Cross: Home Fire Escape Plan  or this one from the NFPA: Escape Planning Tips.

Smoke Alarms

This is your first line of defense. According to the American Red Cross, the National Fire Alarm Code (NFPA 72) requires all new homes to have inter-connected hard-wired smoke alarms with battery backup. If you don’t have an interconnected system, battery-powered alarms are easily installed. Both types of alarms need to be located on every level of the home with one inside each bedroom.

Fire Extinguishers

Since most home fires start in the kitchen, you’ll want to put a fire extinguisher in there, at a minimum. But it’s recommended to place them in multiple locations around the house. Since extinguishers from various makers all work differently, it’s a good idea for the adults in the household to get training from the local fire department. Extinguishers should be installed near exits, away from heat sources, and up high enough that kids can’t reach them.

Sprinkler Systems

While a smoke alarm will detect smoke, an automatic sprinkler system gives you a way of dealing with flames immediately. While you’re waiting on the fire department to arrive, sprinklers can help slow a fire’s progress or can even douse it completely. Moreover, a sprinkler system can prevent deadly gases and smoke from affecting your family and could also extinguish a fire that breaks out while you’re away from home.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms

There’s a good reason carbon monoxide (CO) is called the “silent killer.” This deadly gas is invisible, odorless, and colorless and even a small amount can be fatal if inhaled for long enough. Install carbon monoxide alarms on each level of your home and outside bedrooms. If the alarm emits its high-pitched warning, get outside as quickly as possible or open windows and doors and take deep breaths of fresh air. CO poisoning can cause headaches, nausea, and tiredness and can be mistaken for flu.

Fire Escape Ladders

If your home has more than one floor, collapsible fire ladders should be a part of your fire-safety arsenal. Place a ladder where it’s easy to access in every upper-level room in case your evacuation route gets cut off by smoke or fire. Then, have the entire family rehearse the steps they would take to get the ladders out and attached to open windows. As noted in the following link on Ready.gov, make sure to practice to ensure everyone can safely use the ladder: Home Fire Escape Plan

No one wants to dwell on the possibility of their family being in danger or their home being consumed by flames, but this is one situation where being properly prepared could save lives and property. If you haven’t already done so, make an escape plan and go over it with your family. And check your homeowner’s insurance to make sure your policy is up to date with adequate coverage.

If you have any questions, give us a call and also ask about our Emergency Ready Profile, to help you be prepared for all disaster, manmade and natural.

Tips to Put Out Fires in the Kitchen Safely

7/2/2021 (Permalink)

Fire fighters extinguishing a kitchen fire. If this happens in your Sunland/Tujunga home, we have highly trained Fire Restoration Technicians "Here to Help."

SERVPRO of Sunland/Tujunga recognizes that over half of home fires start in the kitchen. Some kitchen fires start out small enough that you might be able to put them out easily. By being proactive, you can save yourself and others from fire and smoke injuries in your Charlottesville home.

Remember that fire is fast. If you cannot contain a fire immediately, leave and bring everyone with you. Call 9-1-1 from outside the home.

SERVPRO of Sunland/Tujunga has these tips to offer for handling a small cooking fire:

    • If the fire is on the stovetop or in a pot, put a lid on the fire to smother the flames. Turn off the burner
    • If a cloth on the stovetop is on fire, put a lid on the fire to smother the flames.  Turn off any burners
  • Do not use water on a gas fire or a grease fire. Pot lids will smother a fire. You can also use (a lot of) baking soda. Pour a box of baking soda on the fire
  • If the fire is in the oven, turn off the heat. Close the oven door.

IMPORTANT:

Never leave fire-fighting to chance. SERVPRO of Sunland/Tujunga knows that objects can be replaced. People and pets cannot.

Tips to Prevent Your Christmas Tree From Catching Fire

4/9/2021 (Permalink)

Christmas tree surrounded by palm trees. Following fire safety trips for your Christmas tree is important during the holidays.

‘Tis the season for holiday shopping, cooking, and decorating. Even in sunny California, residents purchase real Christmas trees every year to decorate their home with. Lights are strung, ornaments put on, and stars top the tree. While Christmas trees are definitely a sight to admire, they can be one of the uncommon sources of fire, posing a dangerous hazard to your home .

Every year, on average, 160 fires start with Christmas trees. Typical electrical items, lighting equipment or a heat source, like a candle, were the main causes of the fire. Fires can be very common and with chances increased during the holiday season, follow these tips on preventing a Christmas tree fire:

1. Get a New Tree

Like a brand-new car, a Christmas tree also needs that “fresh off the lot” smell. Your tree should be slightly fragrant, with needles that do not easily brush or fall off when you pass your hand through the tree. If needles fall quickly, pass on that particular tree to something fresher and newer.

2.Hydrate Your Tree

Once you have chosen the perfect tree to showcase in your living room, make sure you are watering your tree regularly. Christmas trees usually require daily watering. A drier tree, like many objects, are easily lit and spread fires much more quickly.

3. Don’t Overload Your Tree

A well-lit tree with plenty of bows and ornaments can really put someone in the holiday spirit. When decorating the tree however, be sure not to overload it. It is also suggested to check the wires on your strings to make sure there are no breaks that can cause a spark. When placing your tree and it’s decorations, be sure to stay clear of any electrical equipment, sockets, and even, for the few Floridians that have them, fire places.

4. Don’t Go Past Four Weeks of Use

Christmas trees last for a maximum of four weeks before they should be taken down. There are plenty of organizations that provide tree pickup and recycling.

If a real Christmas tree seems like too much work, artificial trees are also a great option. Plastic trees can catch fire easily just like a real tree. Choose instead a well-rated fire-retardant artificial tree. Remember to follow similar rules when decorating a plastic tree: always make sure not to over decorate and be cautious around sources of electricity and heat. Either type of Christmas tree is susceptible to house fires and should be handled with care.

Removing smoke from a home and going through the fire restoration process is not exactly the best way to spend the holidays.

Removing Smoke After a House Fire

4/9/2021 (Permalink)

Can damage happen to your apartment from a neighbor's house fire?

If you live in an apartment building, it’s likely you hear all of the commotion of your neighbors and their daily lives. Due to having to share the same floors and walls, you will get your fair share of noise, smells, and disasters. Apartments in close proximity of one another are more than likely in the direct path of every day disasters including flooding, mold, odors, and fire.

If the apartment upstairs were to have leaky pipes or an overflown tub, surely there would be damage to the ceiling of the apartment below. The extent of that damage may even go beyond just the ceiling, soaking the carpet and furniture below. Eventually, as is common with stagnant water and moisture, mold may develop affecting more than just one apartment. As with water damage, smoke and odors from fires are also able to permeate into the walls of multiple units.

Depending on the size of the fire and materials burned, smoke and odor can easily travel through HVAC systems, while seeping into the walls of units. It is possible for a nearby unit to develop odors. While odors are a nuisance, they are often a symptom of lingering smoke. Smoke from a house fire can be especially dangerous and potentially harmful to a person’s health. Homes today are filled with many different materials, organic and inorganic. Each material burns differently, releasing different chemicals and matter. Thinking the smoke and odors “will just go away on their own”, is not realistic.

In the event that a unit in your building catches fire, an professional restoration company should inspect your home for any damage relative to the neighboring fire. A thorough inspection will uncover what is not initially seen or smelled. If issues are suspected, a professional restoration company can address these areas, providing proper fire damage restoration.

Safety Tips for Grilling

4/8/2021 (Permalink)

The summer heat gets many people in the mood to hang out by the pool or beach, relax and maybe even grill. However, just like with cooking in your home, grilling too can have its fire hazards and it is best to practice safety measures. While here at SERVPRO of Sunland/Tujunga, we are big fans of throwing a few burgers on the grill on a whim, we also following these safety tips before grilling:

1. Keep Your Grill at a Safe Distance

Keeping your grill a safe distance from your home in a safe, open area is best. This means in an area where there are no overhangs nor any activity from people or pets. Every year many people injure themselves accidentally coming in contact with a grill.

This rule also goes for any furniture or decorations. Many outside decorative items are made from plastics, meant to withstand any weather condition. This plastic and other artificial material can make for quick ignition for a fire.

2. Keep Your Grill Clean

Like grease fires in a L.A. home, leftover grease and food particles can also cause a fire. Cleaning your grill after cooking is done and once it’s cooled down will save you from any work the next time you decide to use it.

3. Do Routine Maintenance and Safety Checks

Grills should be treated like any other major appliance. Checking your propane tanks for gas leaks, loose hoses or any other damage before use is highly recommended. Be sure to keep any charcoal, fuel, and lighters within safe distance once your grill is lit.

4. Keep an Eye on Your Grill

Make sure you are always near your grill, actively watching it for any signs of misuse or potential accidents. Being vigilant and cautious will help keep your food from overcooking also!

5. Don’t Overload Your Grill

Putting too much food on your grill may make the cooking process slower, pushing you to turn up the heat. Turning the heat up can be unsafe especially when cooking food items that are fatty, like hamburgers. Dripping fat combined with high heat can also cause a fire to occur.

Other preventative measures may mean keeping a fire extinguisher nearby, using the proper cooking tools, and storing the grill properly when done.

Soaking up the sun, hopping in the pool, and grilling is all part of summer in Sunland/Tujunga. Doing so safely means more fun days to come without experiencing any fire damage to your home.

California Wildfires in the Summer

4/7/2021 (Permalink)

Wildfires in California are a major cause for concern during springtime and early summer. High chances of fire are in April through to September which are typically drier months for California. This year the first half of May experienced some drought increasing the risk of wildfire occurrences. According to the National Interagency Fire Center and their Wildfire Fire Outlook Report, months from June to August will have below average risk this year. September will see a near nonexistent threat for wildfires.

Even with the forecasted outlook and wet weather, can a summer fire still occur? Of course! As of June 23rd, though Fire Danger Indices are low, there were 11 active wildfires statewide. Storm season can be a catalyst for summer wildfires in a multitude of ways. Let’s take a look as to what fire-causing factors can stem from a storm.

Lightning Strike

Summer months bring about more frequent lightning and thunder storms. Fires started by lightning peak most commonly in May and June in Florida. Lightning caused fires occur when lightning strikes dry area, igniting a flame. These fires tend to be larger, affecting more acreage than that of man-made fires.

Loss of Power and Open Flames

While hurricanes are not a direct factor in starting a fire, human activity during a hurricane can be.  Without practicing proper fire safety measures, fires can unintentionally occur; this can be from a knocked over candle or a flame to close to quickly-igniting material. Cooking equipment and generators can also be a source of fire.

Though the threat of a wildfire occurring randomly is low, there are still risk factors associated with summer storms.. Many of these risks are impossible to control, like lightning or debris, while others require an extra level of attention. House fires or wild fires can still happen, regardless of time of year.

BBQ Grill Safety

9/11/2020 (Permalink)

Burgers being charbroiled on a grill. SERVPRO of Sunland/Tujunga is here to take care of any fire damage issues.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, July is the peak month for grill fires. Below are some tips to help you stay safe and prevent house fires this summer:

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.

When Using A Charcoal Grill:

  • There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
  • If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
  • Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
  • There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container

When Using A Propane Grill:

  • Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year.
    • Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose.
    • A propane leak will release bubbles.
    • If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off both the gas tank and the grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department.
  • If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.
  • If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 5 minutes before re-lighting it.

9/11/2020 (Permalink)

4 common types of fires with fire in the backround. House fires are no joke and make no mistake, will not wait for you to be prepared. Call SERVPRO of Sunland/Tujunga for any fire damage needs.

Timing is everything. In just two minutes, a fire can become life-threatening. In five minutes, a residence can be engulfed in flames.

  • Fire is FAST! In less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into a serious fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or for it to be engulfed in flames - impairing vision and breathing.
  • Fire is HOT! Room temperatures in a fire can be 100 degrees at floor level and rise to 600 degrees at eye level. Inhaling this super-hot air will scorch your lungs and melt clothes to your skin. Always crawl on the floor!
  • Fire is DARK! Fire starts bright, but quickly produces black smoke and complete darkness.
  • Smoke is DEADLY! Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do. Fire produces poisonous gases that disorient you. Asphyxiation (suffocation) is the leading cause of death from home related fires.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

9/11/2020 (Permalink)

Man using fire extinguisher The key to fire safety is knowing what to do before a fire occurs. Call SERVPRO of Sunland/Tujunga for all your fire needs.

As a homeowner or business owner you need to be prepared for emergencies. If you've ever had a fire and had to call in professionals to restore your home or business, you understand the importance of having a fire extinguisher on hand. Following the steps below can ensure that you're using it correctly.

1. Assess the Situation

First, understand what you're dealing with. If the blaze is already too big, the best course of action is to call the fire department and get yourself and anyone else in the house to safety. If you can safely douse it with a fire extinguisher, you need to next make sure that you have right type for whatever material is burning.

2. Use the Right Extinguisher for the Fire

Experts classify extinguishers based on the type of fire they can combat. These include:

  • Type A: for fires involving plastics, wood, textiles and paper
  • Type B: used on fires involving solvents, gasoline, oils, paints and other flammable liquids
  • Type C: for electrical fires, including plugged-in equipment like computers or appliances
  • Type D: for fires involving combustible powders or metals
  • Type E: commonly used for a kitchen fire involving fats or cooking oils

These letter classifications are always found on the sides of the extinguishers, many of which are rated for putting out fires of more than one type.

3. Remember: "PASS"

The PASS method is an easy way to remember how to use most fire extinguishers. Each letter in "PASS" stands for the first word of an operational step.

  • "P": Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher; it needs to be removed before operation.
  • A": Aim the nozzle. The nozzle should not be aimed at the top of the flames, but at the bottom where the combustion is taking place.
  • "S": Squeeze the handle to start the flow.
  • S”: Sweep from side to side while spraying.

By acting quickly and following the instructions above, you can quickly and safely prevent fire damage.

Every fire damage situation is different and each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. At SERVPRO of Sunland/Tujunga, we have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damaged property and contents. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

There are no situations where loss effects can improve without active involvement in mitigation and cleaning, and this starts with removing the fire debris from the property as quickly as you can. Damaging effects can circulate from the presence of destroyed materials and contents, and these combusted elements make up the majority of debris to get cleaned and removed from the residence.

Fire debris removal in our communities homes is expressly the responsibility of the homeowner, which can make matters complicated in securing the right personnel to accomplish the task. Ultimately, many property owners can become convinced that cleaning up this damage on their own is the most frugal approach, though without any training or experience in this arena, you can welcome hazardous exposures to airborne contaminants like soot particles and carcinogens. The best approach is to find out how your insurance provider would have you proceed based on the coverage options they provide your property.

Understanding what gets covered and what does not can help you to determine the expected out of pocket expenses. Common Fire Hazards That Can Be Found in Your Home

9/11/2019 (Permalink)

Home on fire. Fire hazards are at times inevitable, SERVPRO of Sunland/Tujunga is here to help.

No one likes thinking about the possibility of seeing their home damaged by fire, but unfortunately, it’s a harsh reality for a multitude of Americans.

One way you can help protect your home is by understanding fire hazards and knowing how to identify them. In this blog, we’ll be diving into two of the most common household fire hazards.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, during a 5 year period from 2011 to 2015, fire departments in the United States responded to an estimated 8,700 home structure fires a year that were started by candles. In total, there were 82 deaths, 800 injuries and $295 million in direct property damage.

Candles caused 2 percent of reported home fires, with 3 percent of those fires resulting in death and 7 percent with injuries. There were an average of 24 home candle fires reported per day during those five years, with December being the prime time of the year for home candle fires.

Of all the candle fires during this time span, 37 percent started in bedrooms and were responsible for 36 percent of the associated deaths and 51 percent of the associated injuries.

When burning a candle, be sure it’s kept at least one foot away from anything that could burn and is in a sturdy holder that won’t easily tip over. Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home and always blow out all candles before leaving a room or going to sleep.

While cooking is the leading cause of home fires, smoking is the leading cause of home fire deaths.

An estimated 17,200 home structure fires were reported in 2014 due to smoking materials, which includes cigarettes, pipes and cigars. Those fires resulted in 570 deaths, 1,140 injuries and $426 million in property damage per the Coalition for Fire Safe Cigarettes.

If you’re a smoker, it is safest to smoke outside, as most deaths result from fires that have started in living rooms, family rooms or bedrooms. Fire-safe cigarettes are the best option, and a deep, sturdy ashtray should be used.

Douse all cigarette butts and ashes in water or sand prior to throwing them out and keep in mind that one out of four fatal victims of smoking-material fires is not the smoker whose cigarette started the fire.

While candles and smoking are two of the most common causes of home structure fires, there are also other lesser-known hazards that can be present in your home.

The Nature of Different Types of Fire

9/11/2019 (Permalink)

Fire damage home and banner with the SERVPRO slogan. SERVPRO of Sunland/Tujunga are aware of the different types of fires.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Alamo Heights will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Fire Hazards to Look Out for This Summer

5/13/2019 (Permalink)

Summer time is such a fun, beautiful time of year. Stay safe out there!

4/29/2019

The weather is warmer, summer time is finally arriving! That being said, there are still a wide variety of fire hazards that you should watch out for, even during the warm months.

1. Grills: Whether you’re cooking burgers for the family event or grilling up kabobs for dinner, you will inherently deal with fire. Most are gas grills, which presents an even greater risk. In fact, the NFPA (https://www.nfpa.org/News-and-Research/Data-research-and-tools/US-Fire-Problem/Home-Grill-Fires) reports that an average of 9,600 home fires are caused by grilling each year. Here are some fire safety tips for the grill:

  • Always check for any potential fire hazards before firing up the grill.
  • If the grill does not light the first time, let the gas dissipate for at least 5 minutes before attempting to light the grill again.
  • Be sure the grill is clean before using to get rid of oil and gas residue.
  • Make sure the grill is set up in an open, outdoor area and keep it a good distance from the house and railings.

2. Dryers: This is a fire hazard year round. In fact, the leading cause of clothes-dryer related fires is a failure to keep the lint baskets clean. Lint is combustible. Lint causes fires. It takes seconds to clean out the lint basket, so just make a habit of it when you get your clothes out of the dryer. If you have space for a clothesline in the spring and summer months- use it! There’s nothing better than fresh, air dried clothes. The NFPA also recommends cleaning out the vent pipe at least once a year so lint or other flammable particles do not get stuck in the vent pipe.

3. Outdoor Fire Pits and Bonfires

The necessary safety precautions for an outdoor fire pit are pretty obvious, but keep these in mind when you’re having a party on a cool spring night.

  • Always have an adult present around a fire- never leave children unattended!
  • Always have a bucket of water or a water hose available nearby if things get out of hand.
  • Build the fire away from homes, porches, low-hanging trees, or any other fire hazards.
  • Monitor how much leaves, pine needles, pine needs, paper, and other contents into the fire since these items catch fire quickly and result in high flames and floating embers.
  • Always put the fire out completely before leaving the fire unattended. Don't expect it to die down on its own!

Fire Safety Tips

Check carbon monoxide and smoke alarms battery

Actively taking steps to prevent fires can easily save lives and property from severe destruction. Being mindful of potential hazards and following simple safety rules can drastically reduce the threat of fire.

Tips are as follows:

  • Take the time to inspect smoke alarms on a yearly basis. Replace batteries and test each alarm to make sure they are working properly. Replace alarms based on the manufacture’s recommended guidelines. Do not obstruct alarms and be sure to install carbon monoxide detectors on each floor and within 10 feet of a bedroom for added protection.
  • Keep young children and pets away from stoves, lighters and ovens. Unplug appliances when they are not in use. Pay special attention to space heaters; turn off and unplug heaters which are not attended.
  • Do not leave lit candles unattended. Keep them out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Clean dryer vents and attached ducts every few months. Inspect the HVAC system on a regular basis and keep the area around it clean and free of clutter.
  • Make sure all fireplaces, fire pits, grills, and torches are distinguished when they are not attended.
  • Keep excessive leaves and brush away from your home or business. Do not store gasoline or propane near anything with a flame. Be sure to have cars inspected regularly to reduce the risk of fire.
  • Inspect extension cords and recycle those which are frayed and worn.
  • Be sure to have functional fire extinguishers in the kitchen and within proximity to appliances with a flame.

Keeping these safety basics in mind, you are being proactive in keeping your home or business safe from fire!

When the fire blows out your windows.

Blown out windows due to the pressure from the flames

This apartment building had one rough night! Due to an electrical shortage that caused a big fire to start in this one unit there was a ton of damage as you can see all the black soot and smoke on the outside of the building. This is a big job for the crew here at SERVPRO of Sunland/Tujunga. There are steps they have to follow to restore this unit and the ones affected around it.

It's important that you don't re-enter your home, or any surrounding structure, that's been affected by the fire until permitted by local building officials or the fire department. Not only can fires erupt again, but there's almost always hidden damage that could render the home unsafe. Open doors carefully, and don't force them open if they're jammed because you run the risk of further structural damage or collapse. Any remaining soot, debris, and dirty water could make you sick too, so use extra precaution when going back into your home, especially if you touch damaged items.

The Aftermath of a fire

The Aftermath of Residential Fire Damage

Residential fire damage has many effects, and the problems you can see may just be the tip of the iceberg. Here are some of the factors that you need to think about when restoring a smoke damaged home.

Smoke hangs Around

Lingering smoke odors don't magically disappear just because you've replaced the worst bits of damage. Many of the surfaces in your home are porous, so they can trap particles that emit foul stenches for months. In addition to cleaning soot from walls, people often end up having to replace clothing, wooden and upholstered furniture, carpets, wallpaper and even paint.

Although there are many ways to mitigate the side effects you'll face in a smoke damaged home, it's essential to adopt a comprehensive approach. Restoration professionals can use specialized machines to filter the particles from the air you breathe and attack odor-producing molecules with tools like ozone generators.

The odor from smoke and soot can spread, so these forms of damage demand more than a mere spot cleaning or extra elbow grease. For instance, suppose you empty your home out and clean the walls thoroughly. If you bring back items that have lingering smoke odors, then you'll erase all of the hard work you did. Make sure you talk to a restoration professional before diving into jobs like cleaning soot from walls or replacing furniture.

Warehouse full of BOOKS!

Wildfires can create a lot of soot, smoke and ash. Soot is the one thing that is tough to see and a bother to clean. Most people might not realize the health hazards that come along after a fire, the soot and smoke can make it harder to breathe and see as well as cause headaches from inhaling the smoke. After the fire department puts the flames out you should always call SERVPRO of Sunland/ Tujunga to come put your home or business back together.
