El Nino

10/19/2018 (Permalink)

Well SERVPRO readers, in case you hadn’t already noticed, El Nino has arrived in Southern California! Meteorologists say that we will be hit with a series of storms as the week continues, and storms are forecasted to dump 2-4 inches along the California coast through Friday.

While this may be great news in light of the drought California has been having, there can also be unforeseen complications that come as a result of this major upswing in our average rainfall. Flash floods could affect Los Angeles County communities that experienced wildfires last summer and fall, with persistent wet conditions putting areas at risk for mudslides. Our readers may also experience unexpected leaks and drips, causing water damage in their homes. For all of these potential emergencies, SERVPRO Sylmar/San Fernando is prepared and ready to respond.

And while we’re out tending to the chaos El Nino can bring, we wanted to offer you a few tips to help safeguard your home from water loss and disaster this El Nino season – especially with a break in the rains headed our way on Friday!

Tip #1: Check those gutters! This can be a simple but very effective way to prevent unwanted water from entering your home or business. Gutters that are clogged with debris from overhanging trees, trash, or roofing materials can easily clog the drain and shuffle unwanted water your way.

Tip #2: Tarp up any unfinished roofing projects. Going along with our first tip, small openings in the roof of your home and business can quickly become large openings with heavy rain, causing water damage inside your building. Make sure to give your local roofing company a call and get those potential problem areas patched up ASAP.

Tip #3: Examine your window glaze and compound. Often times, glazing compound can shrink during the warmer months, making windows more susceptible to unwanted rain water penetration. Your local contractor can help patch this up for you, ensuring that you are set and ready for even the heaviest of El Nino’s rains! Another helpful tip… make sure you close your windows before going to bed or leaving the home!

And finally, Tip #4 (the most important!): Should you find yourself in a situation where you do have a water damage emergency, call SERVPRO Sylmar/San Fernando. Our staff is prepped and ready to respond and help make your El Nino disaster “Like it never even happened.” .

Steps to Follow When Facing Flooding

When flood damage happens to your home, along with the physical and emotional toll the flooding can take on you, many times it can be difficult to know what to do next. Instead of trying to do it alone, take a look at the list below of things that will need to be done to restore your home back to normal.

When you first experience flood damage, you will want to get in touch with a professional flood damage repair company, such as SERVPRO. We are the right pick, because, on top of having the experience and knowledge that you need, we are available 24/7 to assist you in your time of need.

Make sure and turn off all the electricity, as water and electricity do not mix. Even if you think the area is safe, it is better to be safe until a professional can evaluate the situation. You will also want to stop the water. If it is possible at all, try and stop more water from coming into your home. You can place barriers between any gaps in your home and the external sources of water, like mats, boards, and other items which could stop the water.

Remove any equipment, furniture, and other items away from the moisture and water. If you cannot move it yourself, you can have a storage company come and relocate it until the water is extracted and your home is dry again. If the furniture has been damaged already by the water, you cannot store it, since it will be a source of mold and mildew growth. Therefore, choose just the furniture that is dry.

All the water and humidity will then need to be professionally extracted from your home, which the technicians at SERVPRO can do for you. This includes your furniture, carpets, drywall and other areas that have been impacted. Some of your possessions may not be salvageable and will need to be appropriately disposed of. We can help you to determine which items can be saved and which ones cannot. Some items we will be able to fix for you, while others could be a potential health hazard and need to be taken out of your home. Flooding can cause damage to many areas in your home which will need repairs include walls, cabinets, furniture and floors. These items can wind up needing extensive remediation, all of which we can assist you with.

Make a Storm Plan!

10/3/2018 (Permalink)

Formulating a Plan When You Live in a Flood Prone Area can Help Save Your Property

Apart from the dangers that they present to humans, storm floods leave behind a series of destruction in their wake, ruining buildings, washing away natural landscape features, and demolishing roads. Often, homeowners find themselves dealing with extensive damage on their property. Floods can cause a surprising amount of structural damage to a structure, especially when water finds its way into the house and stays there for a prolonged period.

When the flood waters recede, the first thing you should do is contact a trusted restoration company to assess the damage. As a locally based and operated business,  We have a team of highly trained, highly experienced technicians with access to advanced tools and equipment, ensuring that the restoration process goes swiftly and smoothly.

The most important thing to remember when faced with any type of flood damage situation is to keep your family safe. Items may be salvageable, and if you take additional measures to protect your most priced documents, family photos, and heirlooms, the loss and devastation can be much less.

One way you can protect important documents and photos from severe water damage is by digitizing them. Today, many storage devices such as USB drives can withstand some level of water damage and are often salvageable. You may also store these items on a portable hard drive, and then lock the device securely in a safety deposit box. While digital copies are not the same as originals, recreating the images to their original state is relatively easy.

Make a list of all valuable items in your home, and even take photos of the exterior and interior of your home. Keep this list along with your insurance plan in a safe place that is relatively less susceptible to flooding. Consult your insurance agent on what to include in the itemized list.

Storm prep

9/18/2018 (Permalink)

One way or another we experience storms.   Rather it be snow, rain, wind, etc, it is going to happen. When it does happen we need to be prepared. The following list is what is recommended at a minimum to be ready in the event of a storm.
    • Flash Light (it is possible for the power to go out during a storm)
    • Extra Batteries (flashlights never work when needed, having extra batteries can save you from the dark)
    • First Aid Kit (make sure nothing is outdated in the kit so it is possible to use the items if needed)
    • Cellphone (Now a days everyone has a cellphone, it is necessary to have one in case the house phone does not connection)
    • Canned Food (might not have food to cook, it is important to have up to date canned foods just in case for emergency purposes)
    • Manual Can Opener (do not just rely on an electrical can opener because the electricity can go out during a storm)
    • Bottled Water (water is the most important thing to have around the house)
    • Blanket (it is possible for the heaters at your property to stop working, make sure you have blankets around to keep you warm)
    • Battery Powered Weather Radio (using a radio can help you stay connected to what is happening during a storm in case your T.V does not work and you cannot connect to the weather channel)

Being prepared will help keep panic at a minimum especially in a family that has children involved. Not only will these items benefit you but it will help benefit your loved ones around as well. These items should be kept in a safe place with easy access in case of a storm emergency. Every month or so check the battery life and replace if needed. Make sure that the canned food and bottles of water are up to date and if need replacements to do it immediately during a storm season. Also remember to go over the items in the kit with your family so they are aware of everything put into the kit.

Check your trees

10/6/2017 (Permalink)

Most damage to a property during severe weather occurs when limbs or trees fall. High winds and saturated soil conditions typical of winter storms can cause tree roots to fail and branches to weaken. The heavy rainfall is what causes the ground to be so saturated and makes the trees unstable. Trees that retain foliage in winter such as conifers and certain oaks are most at risk for damage because the foliage adds weight and wind resistance. None of this is any easy experience for a homeowner. That is why pre-storm strategies are recommended to identify potentially hazardous conditions and to help reduce the risk of damage before harsh weather occurs.

In many cases, hazards are not always obvious to the untrained eye and correcting them can be a dangerous job. While it is impossible to totally protect your trees and property from severe storms, a certified tree specialist can inspect for issues that could predispose trees to failure. This could include a climbing inspection or an analysis of decay that may be present in the branches, stems, or roots.

Be prepared for rain fall

9/29/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Be prepared for rain fall Late night emergency tarp up due to the storm.

Do these few tasks to ensure you are in the clear for the next storm:

  • Trim the trees. Dead tree limbs can fall on your roof and cause damage, especially when it’s raining or snowing. Trees that are leaning towards your house could also fall on your roof or allow squirrels and raccoons to pay your roof a visit. Twigs, leaves, and other debris can cause rotting, gutter blockage, termite invasion, and roof damage. If you want to make sure you are in the clear make sure you remove anything hanging over your home.
  • Check and clean the gutters. One of the best ways to prepare for the cold season is to clean your gutters and ensure they’re well-anchored. This allows all the water to flow off your roof. So remove leaves and other debris from the gutters regularly throughout the fall.
  • Inspect the roof for damage:
    • Check the roof flashings – these cover gaps near vents and chimneys, and can be dislocated during a storm. Replace faulty flashing pieces.
    • If you have an asphalt roof, replace shingles that have bare spots, are warping, or are curling at the edges.
    • If you own a wooden shake roof, look for signs of warping. If at least 25 percent of your wood shingles are damaged, replace the roofing material.
    • If you have a metal roof, look for signs of pitting, corrosion or gapping seams as these can lead to leaks or underlay damages.

Steps to take after you spot storm damage

9/29/2017 (Permalink)

Storm damage can occur at any time and can cause an immense amount of harm to your home. Heavy rains can cause flooding and powerful winds can cause roof damage and downed trees on your property. Sometimes post storm damage can create health issues so make sure you take the proper steps.

Take Safety Precautions

Heavy winds and rain can create physical hazards such as collapsed roofing materials, window damage, collapsed walls or standing water in the basement or home interior. In addition, moisture can soak into furniture, carpeting, and building materials making the perfect environment for mold growth that can cause health issues. Beware of broken glass, exposed nails, and other sharp objects on the property. Contact SERVPRO of Sylmar/ San Fernando to help do basic tasks to secure your property and make it safe to use. If necessary, arrange for an alternative place for you and your family to live while your property is being restored to safe living condition.

Photograph the Damage

If it is safe to move around your property, use your cellphone or a camera to photograph the damage so that you will have a record for your insurance company. This action will ensure that you are fully compensated for all the damages.

Contact Your Insurance Company

Contact your insurance agent to notify them about the damage to your home immediately. The company will send out an adjustor to determine the extent of the damage so that payment for repairs can be made quickly.

Look Into Federal Disaster Assistance

The federal government may have declared the area affected by the storm as a disaster area that is eligible for low-cost loans to help restore your property to normal. You will be required to file documents to receive these loans.

When a storm-related disaster strikes, it may seem overwhelming, but these steps can help you to begin the process of restoring your home, and your life, to normal. At SERVPRO of Sylmar/San Fernando we provide 24-hour emergency disaster service. We specialize in the stabilization and restoration of homes and businesses that have suffered small or large loss from water, flood, wind, storm, fire and smoke disaster.
